The Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO) has been hosting digital meetups around the country as part of their Digital Participation programme. The meetups have been great in getting folk together to share ideas, irritations and knowledge. You know, a meetup. It has always been the case that SCVO would kick things off and then hand the meetup organising to the community to continue and I’ve taken up the challenge in Edinburgh. Along with my trusty sidekick Rebecca Curtis-Moss and the support of digital badass Mark Muir, the Edinburgh Digital Media Meetups are back in action as of next month.
I was invited to talk about internal and team collaboration tools at SCVO’s digital meetup in Edinburgh last month. I focussed on the ideas behind using collaboration platforms, why email sucks and some things that would be handy to consider in planning to open a collaboration space. I highlighted Slack and Yammer because they are ubiquitous and free to access though I’m not going to lie, I became slightly evangelical about Slack and so did the rest of the room. We had really interesting discussions about affecting behaviour change in colleagues, information management and retention schedules, data protection and community management and it became clear folk were really chomping at the bit to get started with Slack but more time and space was needed.
So, on the back of the SCVO meetup Edinburgh Digital Media Meetup is taking the wheel and we are hosting a Slack workshop on November 8th from 6pm at Hayweight House. Full detailed listing on Edinburgh Digital Media Meetup page. If you miss out this time you can always hire me to come to you 🙂
